Pringle, Brogan welcome additional library hours for Donegal town, and will continue to push for more
- Updated: 6th September 2024
Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, and Independent Councillor Jimmy Brogan have welcomed the expansion of hours at Donegal Town Library, and said they will continue to push for more days for such a vital community service.
Deputy Pringle said: “We have made many representations about the reduced library hours in Donegal town, and while the additional hours show progress, they are not nearly enough. Donegal County Council must recognise the vital role that libraries play in our communities and fund them adequately in order to provide this much-needed service.
“I also welcome the long-awaited reopening of Ballyshannon Library and the additional hours for Bundoran. People of all ages value and use their libraries, and Jimmy and I heard this time and again during the canvass for the local elections,” he said.
The Donegal Town Library will now open a second day per week, and will open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid-September.
Cllr Brogan said: “Thomas Pringle and I have been in contact with the library service for some time, and I am pleased to see that a second day has been added each week, though there is still a lot of room for improvement. This is a vital service for Donegal town and the surrounding area, and we will continue to push for further extensions to the opening hours to best serve the people.
“When Thomas and I were out canvassing in the recent local elections we found that the lack of library services was one of the biggest issues that came up among the people we spoke to, and their voices must be heard,” he said.
