Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, has welcomed Ireland’s long overdue recognition of the state of Palestine, but said there is more to be done to bring peace and justice to the Palestinian people.
The deputy yesterday condemned the Government decision to have the Israeli ambassador at Sunday’s National Famine Commemoration, calling it “pure hypocrisy”.
Deputy Pringle said: “I, along with many members of the public, were shocked to see the Israeli Ambassador at the National Famine Commemoration. And that was a political decision made by the Government to have the ambassador there.
“As we see Israel committing genocide against the Palestinian people, as we see Palestinians facing famine, to have the ambassador there to commemorate our Famine was pure hypocrisy,” he said.
The deputy called for a debate on the issue in the Dáil on Tuesday, during Questions on policy or legislation.
Deputy Pringle said: “While I welcome the Government’s long overdue recognition of the state of Palestine, we need to go a lot further than that to bring peace and justice to Palestine. We need to call out Israel on what they are doing, and we need a debate in this House to make sure that happens.”
