Pringle presses Government to move on temporary accommodation for mica-affected households

Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, told the Minister for Housing that families forced to leave their mica-affected homes need Government to move quickly on providing temporary accommodation.

Addressing the Dáil today, Deputy Pringle said: “The mica action committee held a protest in Lifford yesterday in relation to the inaction of Donegal County Council in actually rolling out a scheme that many homeowners could buy into.

“It seems that the council is waiting for the Department to make a decision in terms of putting the scheme together,” he said.

Deputy Pringle raised the issue with Minister Darragh O’Brien during questions on policy or legislation.

Deputy Pringle said something needs to happen very quickly, “to provide accommodation for families that have had to leave their homes because mica is destroying their homes. They can’t wait for a remediation scheme.

“The council should be putting together sites, preparing for temporary accommodation for those families that urgently need it because they can’t wait,” he said.

In his response, Minister O’Brien said he was waiting for the local authority to revert to him with some items, particularly around the scale of that cohort of homeowners. The minister said he will keep deputies informed.
