Pringle calls on Government for independent public inquiry into HSE management of disability services
- Updated: 16th June 2022
Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, has called on the government to ensure that there is an independent public inquiry into the management of disability services in Donegal and nationally as a matter of urgency.
Addressing the Dáil today, Deputy Pringle said: “We have seen in the media reports in the last week a new investigation report into abuse in HSE-run residential services in Donegal. We now see shockingly that 10 more perpetrators along with Brandon have carried out up to 40 incidents of abuse.
“What is even more shocking is that these incidents were all on file with the HSE, so management knew about them, just like Brandon as well.
“I think that needs to sink in. The HSE was aware of all these instances of abuse,” he said.
“Families were not told and I know that some families only found out this week,” the deputy said.
Speaking today during Questions on Promised Legislation, Deputy Pringle asked: “Will your government now ensure that there is a fully independent public inquiry into the management of disability services in Donegal and nationally as a matter of urgency?”
In response, Minister Anne Rabbitte said she had met earlier in the day with the HSE on the recent HSE validation report. She said she has sought further information, and that the HSE will come back to her in the next 10 days and she will keep the Dáil updated.
