Pringle questions whether EU protection directive covers all in Ukraine
- Updated: 9th March 2022
Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, has asked the Taoiseach whether all people in Ukraine affected by the war will be covered by the EU temporary protection directive.
Deputy Pringle said: “The EU has activated the temporary protection directive, which is very welcome, and that allows access for the Ukrainian citizens to the EU and that’s more than welcome. Irish people have been very forthcoming, offering accommodation, and they never let themselves down in relation to this.”
Deputy Pringle raised the issue in the Dáil today with the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, during questions on promised legislation.
The deputy said: “While the focus is on Ukrainian citizens, what about other nationalities that are affected by the war over there? I’ve written already to the Minister for Justice last Monday, a week ago, in relation to this, without any response.
“Are other nationalities going to be covered under the temporary protection directive as well, and can they access the EU and access Ireland for safety?” he asked.
The Taoiseach said Ireland was working in concert with its European colleagues, calling the directive “an unprecedented measure”. He said he thought issues in respect to other nationalities would be explored further, and said it was difficult to quantify the issue right now.
