Pringle presses Government to address rental crisis, as Donegal sees highest rise in rents nationally
- Updated: 10th February 2022
Independent TD for Donegal, Thomas Pringle, has pressured the Tánaiste to address the national rental crisis, as reports showed Donegal recording the highest rise in rents in the country.
The deputy also highlighted the families affected by the mica crisis, who are facing a further hurdle when they try to secure rental accommodation.
Addressing the Tánaiste in the Dáil today during Questions on Promised Legislation, Deputy Pringle said: “As you know, yesterday’s report on daft.ie showed a shocking rise in rental prices across the country.
“Nationally, rents went up by 10 per cent, with 20 counties seeing double-digit increases. My own constituency of Donegal has seen the highest rise nationally, with rents increasing by an astonishing 24.3 per cent.
“Tánaiste, something has to be done. This is not acceptable and it certainly is not sustainable,” he said.
The deputy said that week after week people come to his constituency office who can’t afford to buy, but who are also unable to find rental accommodation.
Deputy Pringle said: “Where are they supposed to go? There are no long-term rentals available as short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, are taking over the rental market. This needs to be addressed immediately.
“Many families in Donegal are already facing the devastating mica crisis and are now being forced to face the rental crisis as well. Have they not been through enough at this stage?”
The deputy asked what was going to be done about it, saying, “Tánaiste, the rental crisis is not just a Dublin problem. This is a problem across the country.”
